What happens to the phones?
If the phones can be re-used, then they’ll be sent abroad to developing countries such as Kenya or India where they offer a lifeline in terms of communication in places where it is difficult to get access to a landline phone.

If mobiles don’t work and can’t be repaired, they are sent to specialist companies for ‘refining’. This involves recovering the tiny amounts of precious metals from the phone and also dealing with the battery, which is the most hazardous part.
